Potential use of by-products from Pacific sand lance fish sauce and biji [a by-product from soybean curd (tofu)] as animal feed was evaluated. Using the simplex experimental design, fish sauce by-product, biji, and wheat flour were mixed and extruded using a twin-screw extruder under optimal operation conditions. Compositional and functional properties of the test feed were measured and applied to mathematical models. Values of protein, calcium, ash, and color showed a linear regression (P<0.001), whereas those of bending failure stress and lipid contents followed quadratic model. Trace plots demonstrated effects. The optimum mixture ratios, based on the least cost linear programming, were 13.3, 44.3, and 42.3% for fish sauce by-product, biji, and wheat flour, respectively. Results reveal by-products obtained from fish sauce and tofu processing could be used as animal feeds, but fortification with additional protein sources was suggested.
